If you look at it closely, each vintage corresponds to only a moment in time – compared to the history of Wachau and winegrowing at Spitzer Graben. Yet, or maybe just because of that, we set the same standards year after year: bringing excellent taste to the glass and creating precious moments of enjoyment. With deep respect for the pristine, a big heart for artisanal wine culture and, at the same time, a great deal of openness to innovation. Our firm conviction: unique wines require an uncompromising attitude and the motivation to give your best every day, in the vineyard and in the cellar.

Wachau wines with a personal touch
Full of character, expressive and distinctive: Our main varieties are Grüner Veltliner (Green Veltliner) and Riesling, furthermore we cultivate Neuburger – the specialty of Spitzer Graben, Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and Muskateller (Muscat). With a lot of heart and soul and in real handwork.
As we select them meticulously, we have great confidence in each and every one of our grapes. Time and patience, our best consultants, dictate focus and timing during the grape harvest. We are only satisfied with the highest quality. In the meantime, wine lovers around the world know about that – and they appreciate our elegant wines because of their excellent storage property, too.

Our products are available for cellar door sales, here at Wachau, where wine enjoyment has its home. It is best to call us before you come, so we can be there for you.
You would like a tasting – accompanied by stories from the wine cellar and the vineyard? We will tell you about our passionate enthusiasm for good wine while putting our noses in the glasses. We also answer all your questions – in German or English. When should we reserve time for you?

The power of our vineyards
Here at Spitzer Graben, we keep a treasure: old grapevines that we preserve and care for, vineyards where we know each grape and sustainably cultivated land, in which the quality of our wine has been rooted for generations.
Our vineyards’ top location, the special climatic conditions at Spitzer Graben and the mineral properties of each yard are the substrate on which our grapes thrive. The character of our expressive wines reflects the terroir’s complexity.

Rooted
To know who you are, you have to know where you come from. The Donabaum is the symbol for our rootedness here at Spitzer Graben where our winery’s core house has been located since 1668 at least. Wine has been cultivated here since time immemorial.
In 1853, Josef and Anna Maria Donabaum bought the yard and laid the foundation for our family business.
Since then, we have carried the passion for winemaking in our genes and think in terms of generations when it comes to viticulture: committed to tradition and proud of everything that has been. At the same time keeping a firm eye on the future, with great anticipation for everything that is to come.
Christoph
The boss has already seen a bit of the world: after graduating from Vino HAK Krems and completing his education as a wine and cellar master, he even made it to New Zealand. Since 2012, he has been in charge of the cellar and the vineyard, and since 2020, he has been operating the business.
Maria
Our boss is more than just the heart and soul of the house. She has spent ten years in the tourism industry gaining exactly this gastronomic experience that now benefits our guests. Her demands concerning service, enjoyment and quality guide every step in the winery.
Herta
Because of her passion for cooking, it is obvious that our senior boss is responsible for the Heurigen kitchen. Greater than her love for cooking and gardening is only her pride in her sons: for the boys she wishes for nothing more than that all their wishes may come true.
Josef
Everyone knows the senior boss as Sepp or LongJoe. He supports Christoph in the vineyard as well as in the cellar, and he is still a Heurigen keeper through and through. He is at least as proud of his sons and daughters-in-law as he is of Herta.
That is what is good and genuine about a large family: we are all on the same page because we were born with the joy of doing and our shared history unites us.
Wine tavern
Exceptional Wines in a Special Ambiance
The Wachau, our home, our way of life. Where good taste shapes the quality of life. Three times a year, we open our Heuriger and transform enjoyment into an experience. With great warmth and sociability – as has been the tradition at our winery for over 100 years.
We love precise, fine wines that do not shine with vanity but focus on elegance and substance. For this – we thought – a special Heuriger is also needed, with its own atmosphere, modern yet cozy.
Up to 80 guests can be seated in our Heuriger. The ambiance reflects our idea of hospitality and creates space for warm encounters and beautiful moments.
The courtyard and garden can accommodate around 100 people, which we open for you in May and August. Indoors and outdoors, look forward to homemade delicacies and our excellent Wachau wines, which we serve with a friendly smile.
And perhaps you’ll take a few bottles of your favorite wine home with you while you’re here.
